Anonymous asked: Hello, I am a new student to UBC SALA MArch program,May I ask you questions about the school? Is it theoretical or practical or technical? are there a lot of writing and reading? is there any design-build labs? Is it easy to find a job after graduation? And what do you think of UBC compared to UToronto MArch(Since I am also accepted by Toronto) Thank you very much for you patience.

Anonymous asked: Hi Ryan, Thanks for the reply. To begin with, Vancouver is the greatest city on earth, and I have done some traveling to be able to vouch for it. Also, The canucks are bound to win some time soon and I want to be there for it. Seriously, the school first appealed to me because of how well written the website is. Their high regard for mastery of grammar and language comes through in your...
Anonymous asked: Hi Ryan, I find your "musings" both interesting and inspiring. I am a Studio Art major applying to M. Arch after four years of working in nearly every trade I could get my hands on. I am American, but UBC is the only school I want to go to. I have recently been accepted into Kansas State 5 year program, and will be with them for only 1 semester in a Studio and History class to build...

Anonymous asked: Thanks ! My questions are mainly about admissions so I'm guessing you can't answer too much about that so I'll just try emailing them again but a non admissions question I do have is that if theres a co-op option for the ENDS program by any chance?

Anonymous asked: Hi, I found your tumblr while browsing through the ubc tag and I'm wondering if you're able to answer any questions about the ENDS program? Reason being is that I've sent them an email a while ago and still havent received a reply since I'm guessing email replies aren't too frequent during the summer

gunzrfun asked: Hey, I just recently found about your blog as i read that you are a ryerson architecture graduate. I'm planning on going into the program next year and wanted to ask what the first few years were like, specifically what skills the program focuses on developing or maybe some tips for a more long-term plan. I know this may have been a while ago and the program might have changed but i assume...

Anonymous asked: Hi Ryan, I'm an international M Arch (3yr+) applicant. Left a 10yr career in oil trading & hope to make a more meaningful pursuit in Architecture. Offered admission to UBC & University of Washington(UW). From my knowledge, both are deeply involved with their local communities & their graduates are much sought after by their cities. My impression is UW's program, student work...

I will return to
In my nine years of architecture and design education I have never been involved with such a mismanaged and poorly run studio. I have tried at every opportunity to give the benefit of the doubt and do my best to make it a positive experience for my last studio.
This may read as just a student complaining, but it is not that. All four of them do not communicate expectations with each other...

Week 37
There are scales of understanding and knowing in architecture school. I just spent the better part of two weeks with new students who for the most part knew very little about architecture school. This is by no measure means they are unintelligent or uncreative; they are just entering a new world in which things will be unfamiliar. Physically knowing your surrounds is tantamount to being...

Week 34
With the beginning of August come and gone, moving seems to be on every one’s mind. Whether it be moving apartments, cities or moving your mindset, the horizon of autumn and the upcoming semester is approaching. There is still summer to be had, but all of the goals you have set for yourself over these months need to be put into action now or wait for next summer.
With all of the excitement...
